The Irish Education System and Baking

Somewhere in my wanderings though the Blogosphere
I came across a debate about whether people continue
to bake in their own homes or not.
I have to admit that this question does not even dawn on me.
While we have so many good bakeries and coffee shops in Dublin,
home baking always seems the most attractive option.
Many shop bought confectionerys are very sweet and while
tasty, are less substantial for cold Winter living.

We were taught to bake in primary school.
It was part of the curriculum, along with top sewing
and making innumerable maps of our county, presumably
so that we would not get lost.
We even had an examiner come all the way from Dublin
to check on our activities. This serious lady,
wearing a very serious hat, found my enthusiastic kneading
very professional indeed, which inspired a lifelong contentment
and a general distain for all machines that might offer a replacement
for what I now see is good exercise.
